Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification covering five core technical controls — the ones that block the most common attacks. It matters commercially as well as technically: public-sector contracts require it, bigger clients increasingly expect it from suppliers, and insurers look for it. It's one of the cheapest ways a small business can prove it takes security seriously.
Once the groundwork is in place, certification itself is usually done within a few weeks. The variable is how much needs tightening first — old devices, missing multi-factor authentication, unmanaged accounts. Nobody 'bothers' — that's the point. The attacks that hit small businesses are automated and indiscriminate: mass phishing, credential stuffing, and scans for unpatched systems.
